Maitake (Grifola frondosa) D-fraction beta-glucan supplement meaningfully increased NK cell activity in 2025 clinical trial. Following reishi, this becomes the second axis of the matrix.

Journal of Medicinal Food 2025 RCT reported that after 12 weeks of D-fraction 1~3 mg/kg/day supplementation, NK cell activity in 60 healthy adults meaningfully increased compared to control. IL-12 and TNF-alpha immune cytokine balance also restored.

What is Maitake

Maitake (Grifola frondosa) is an East Asian native edible and medicinal mushroom from Japan, Korea, China. English name “Hen of the Woods.” Grows on hardwood stumps. Japanese maitake (舞茸).

Active component is beta-glucan polysaccharide. D-fraction emerges as the most prominent for immune activation per clinical confirmation. Molecular weight around 1,000 kDa.

NK Cell + Immunoglobulin Matrix

NK cells (Natural Killer) are core of innate immunity. 5~15% of lymphocytes, killing virus-infected cells and tumor cells immediately without antigen recognition.

D-fraction activates NK cell receptors (Dectin-1, complement receptor) to increase NK cell activity and immunoglobulin (IgM, IgG) secretion. Simultaneously restores anti-inflammatory cytokine balance.

Clinical Data

  • Journal of Medicinal Food 2025 RCT 60 participants 12 weeks: NK cell activity meaningfully increased
  • Tokyo University of Pharmacy PMID 19942583: D-fraction tumor suppression in mouse model (preclinical)
  • IL-12, TNF-alpha balance restored

Reishi and Maitake Matrix

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is dual activity of triterpenoids (100+ ganoderic acids) and beta-glucan. Anti-inflammatory + liver protection + NK activation.

Maitake has D-fraction beta-glucan single target advantage in NK activation. Two mushrooms with different targets, combinable as matrix.

Korean Dietary Integration

Maitake distributed in Korean market as maitake or itsae mushroom. 100~150g pack 3,000~6,000 won. Sauteed with perilla oil and garlic, or added to hot pot.

Standardized extract capsule 1~3 mg/kg/day is clinical option. 30~60 mg D-fraction powder capsule 30 min before meal.

Cautions

  • Anticoagulant (warfarin, heparin) combination risks bleeding. Physician evaluation essential
  • Autoimmune disease patients risk immune over-activation. Physician evaluation
  • Hypoglycemic drug combination caution (maitake slightly lowers glucose)
  • Allergy possibility (rare but reported)

Consumer Message

Exercise + sleep + vitamin D + zinc recovery as strongest foundation for NK activation. Maitake supports on top. Meaningful option for seasonal change + chronic fatigue + immune imbalance.
